Tools: Viewing software downloads
Several of the image databases available here offer expanded features through separate software applications. In particular, collections delivered via ARTStor and Luna Insight® offer downloadable viewers for expanded access to images and presentations.
ARTStor
ARTstor is a searchable database of digital images and associated catalog data. The database provides high resolution images for instruction, study, and research in the arts and the humanities. It combines images from museums, exhibitions, artist's estates, scholarly collections, and other visual archives.
The database is available through the browser. Images may be presented using a downloadable off-line viewer (OIV). Registration as a member of the Cornell University community is necessary in order to use all of ARTstor’s features. For more information, see: http://www.artstor.org/info/.
To Register:
Launch the ARTstor site from the home page. Click on the "Register" button at the right. Enter your email address and a password of your choice. Once you have registered, you may logon to gain full access to all of the features ARTstor.
Instructor Password Requests:
Cornell University faculty members may request a password to obtain instructor privileges. To request an instructor password, send an email message to CUL-IMAGEPASSWORD-L@cornell.edu. Please include "ARTstor Instructor Password Request" in the Subject Heading, and indicate your departmental affiliation.

Luna Insight®-delivered collections at Cornell
Cornell University has licensed the Luna Insight® software as an image delivery system for several image databases that are owned or licensed for access by the Cornell University community. Luna Insight® is available through your browser and through downloaded software, the Luna Insight® Java Client. This program is available either as the password-free Standard Account or as a password-protected Special Account. For access to the Special Account, Cornell users may request a password for access to higher resolution images. See below for details.
The Web Browser Client
Many of the Luna Insight collections offer Internet browser access for a basic level of accessibility. However, Browser access is quick, does not require a login, and is open to everyone everywhere, except when copyright restrictions prohibit off-campus access to licensed collections. Although browser access does not require installation or plug-ins, it will only work if browsers meet minimal requirements. First time users should check their browser configuration.
Browsers supported: Netscape v4.7+, Netscape 7+, Mozilla 1.1+ , Internet Explorer v4.0+
If you are experiencing technical difficulties while using Luna Insight, please make sure that you have disabled any pop-up blocking software. PC users should hold down the control key while launching collections. If you continue to experience difficulties, please report your problem by sending an email to
, stating your name and briefly describing the problems you encountered.
Cornell Community Access
Cornell Students, Faculty, Staff, and Affiliates may also view Image Collections through the Insight Java Client program (download required). All Insight-delivered databases are available for educational, non-commercial, and personal use only.
Most Cornell University Library public computers are equipped with the Insight Java Client, accessible through the start menu in the lower left corner on Windows-equipped desktops. Cornell Community members may also download an auto-install Java Client Program to their personal computer (PC or Macintosh) to gain access to the collections on- or off-campus, in which logon to the collections is automatic. The Java Client program requires a valid Cornell NetID and password to download.
Special Account Access
Faculty, Staff, and other Cornell affiliates with need for special account privileges for instruction, research and development should select the Special Insight download. They will need to obtain a special account username and password to access the collections by emailing a request to CUL-IMAGEPASSWORD-L@cornell.edu. Please include "Insight Password Request" in the Subject Heading, and indicate if you are Faculty, Staff, or other Cornell affiliate. The Java Client program requires a valid Cornell NetID and password to download.
